By Ishaan Bhattacharya Recently, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House would initiate a formal impeachment inquiry due to President Donald J. Trump’s attempts to pressure Ukraine into investigating Trump’s political opponent, Joe Biden. With the 2020 presidential election coming up, this impeachment inquiry is seen as a contentious attack on Trump’s re-election campaign. Although impeachment attempts often reflect on a candidate, I believe that Trump’s voters recognize the inquiry as an effort by the Democrat-controlled House to shame Trump before the upcoming election. Impeachment itself is often thought of as a removal from office, but it depends on the severity of the charges against the president. Furthermore, once an individual is impeached, they face a possible conviction on the charges during which a judgement would entail the person’s removal from office.
