Celebrities have been around for a very long time. The Middle Ages had famous troubadours, the Renaissance had painters, there have been opera singers and silent actors. For the past few decades, celebrities have been singers like Madonna and talk show hosts like Oprah. Much more recently, a new kind of “celebrity” has emerged:YouTubers. These people make lots of money by just filming and broadcasting their lives. Some of their videos are fun, like YouTubers who make awesome slime. Then there's the darker side. “Celebrities” who gain followers by causing controversies. The self-proclaimed sovereigns of controversial YouTubers are Logan and Jake Paul. They each have at least 14 million subscribers each, and they don’t get those numbers by making fluffy slime. Most recently, Logan Paul got in huge trouble for filming in the Japanese ‘suicide forest’. That’s just the latest in a string of disreputable behavior. Their videos can be rude, offensive, and uncivil. After many of his dangerous outdoor stunts, Jake Paul is certified the worst neighbor ever. Those are the mild ones. These videos can teach kids and teenagers bad lessons. Like how being rude to people makes you look cool. If teens see their idols doing irresponsible things, and getting away with them, they might think they are acceptable. Most of what they do is not acceptable, like lighting a pool on fire. The Paul brothers could be ushering in a new generation of pyromaniacs by lighting up anything within arms reach! They should not be allowed to keep glorifying their crazy and dangerous lives. And people shouldn’t watch it. By: Erika Wu and Jadelyn Lou Spring. Bunnies, Easter eggs, and flowers. These are some things that emerge during spring. Spring occurs between March 20 and June 21 in the northern hemisphere. Many thoughts about spring relates to Easter, Coachella Festival, and flowers. However, these aren’t the only things that people look forward to. They also look forward to what happens during spring, holidays in spring, and where people go during spring break. During spring, flowers bloom into the beautiful shape they look like in pictures. More people tend to enjoy spring due to its creation of nature. Also, according to an article in Yougov.com, “While for the majority (30%) of 18-34 year old Americans summer is their favorite season, this is the case for just 20% of those aged 55 and over. 37% of 55s and older prefer spring above all – the perfect time of year for gardening and enjoying the warmer weather before the height of summer.” There are many holidays in spring like St. Patrick's Day and April Fools. There is also Easter and Mother’s day. These holidays are both celebrated by tradition. Mother's day is about celebrating and being grateful for your mother. Easter is about Christians celebrating Jesus Christ’s resurrection, St. Patrick’s Day is about the death of St. Patrick, and April Fools Day is about pranking each other. Spring break is the time where people bond with their families and/or friends. You can travel to many places due to the warmer weather. Spring isn't too hot like summer and not too cold like winter; Spring is just right. People go to places like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York City, and more. Many festivals occur during Spring, including the Coachella Music Festival, which is one of the more popular music festivals in the spring. This event is located in Indio, CA, about 130 miles away from Los Angeles. The general pass admission for three days is $429, and prices have increased. A lot of people state that the Coachella is one of the best music festivals they’ve been to. Many artists perform in this festival such as The Weeknd, Beyonce, and Eminem. You can also download an app to help you schedule when you want to go there because tickets sell out quickly. There are also multiple decorations such as pieces of art. Various festivals happen during this time such as the Stagecoach in Indio. If the tickets are already sold out for the Coachella, don’t be worried, because you can always enjoy the other upcoming music festivals. It’s getting really close to the day we’ve all been waiting for: finding out what high schools we’re all going to. It’s a bittersweet time. For some of people, they’re happy because they’re getting out of middle school and hoping to make new friends and having new classmates. But at the same time, there are some people that don’t want to leave their friends and are scared of a new environment that they’ve never been to. There’s also so much pressure from parents about getting into the best high school that’s best for you and your future. You just want to make them proud. No matter what it takes. You’re already imagining it: Your parents are passing you the letter that holds your future while waiting anxiously for you to open it. You’re taking in a deep breath before ripping the envelope apart to read the words: ‘Congratulations *your name*! You are attending the school of your dreams!’ You’re so happy and relieved! Your parents are jumping with joy! Friends are calling you to tell you how happy they are for you! Everyone is so proud and are congratulating you! But... what if you don’t get into the high school you want? Well, of course you might be disappointed and heartbroken that all the hard work you put into getting in the high school you wanted to was useless. You may cry a little. You may not want to talk about it. It might be a subject that you’re sensitive about. All of that is valid. But don’t worry! It’s not the end of the world if you don’t get into the high school you want! Your high school experience is not completely over! And here’s why: 1.Tons of other great high schools! Just because the high school that you wanted to get into was the ‘best’ one for you doesn’t mean that other high schools aren’t just as great! You just have to give them a chance. Certainly, there are amazing opportunities in other schools that the school you wanted to get into didn’t have. It’s not the school that makes your experience amazing, it’s what you do in your school to make it great. 2.College is more important! I’m not saying that you should completely drop high school and not care about it at all, but if we’re talking about what will shape your entire life and career, it’s definitely college. High school isn’t what’s going to frame what you do in life, it’s too early to determine that. College is what will push you to what you want to do for life and therefore is more important than high school. 3.Relief of pressure! The thing is, you probably applied to your preferred high school because you think it’s going to be challenging and competitive. But if you don’t get in, won’t it just be easier and less stressful for you in your other high school that’s probably just average? This way, you can just enjoy your high school experience without having to worry about complicated homework and tough assignments. Life is better.5. 5.Best of the best! If we’re talking about being in average schools, then we can also talk about the average students… If you’re one of those people who really believes that they’re more advanced than other students but got placed in an average school, then look on the bright side! Now you can be the best of the best in your classes since you’re the exceptional student in the sea of the ordinary. It will also look really good when colleges look at your school and see that you are at the very top. How can colleges not accept you? 6.Just do you! So what if high schools don’t know your determination and talent? You can be the best if you really try your hardest and just be naturally you. Again, schools do not determine your life, it’s really you who does that. Just do your hardest in school and everything will turn out all right. Probably. As you can see, there are many reasons why your high school experience is not completely over. You can rock those 4 years just being you. Who knows? Maybe not going to the high school you preferred will actually be the best choice you will have ever made. |
