There are teachers who keep students in after class if it’s detention or just wanting to explain the rest of homework. Students have places to go. Teachers shouldn’t be allowed to keep students 5 minutes after the bell. Students have places to go when the bell rings whether it’s after-school or home itself. A lot of parents pick their child up after school. If the student is suddenly pulled away from the other students to stay after class when they’re not supposed to, the parents/parent would get worried when their child is late showing up. Some students have after-school somewhere else. They could have Kumon right after school so they can’t stay after school. Other students have to catch the bus. Sometimes students have siblings that go to another school and has to be picked up right after their sibling. Or maybe students promised their parents that they’d be home by a certain time. So students have many places to go after school. Some teachers keep the whole class because of one student. They don’t understand that the whole class is not one student. They don’t understand that the one person in trouble doesn’t care that they made the whole class stay in. It is very annoying when the teacher keeps the whole class in especially here in A.P.G. At this point we all get that “the bell doesn't dismiss you, the teacher does”. We are always in a hurry to get to our lockers and pack our things. But with so many students and the design of the bottom and top lockers, it makes it hard for each student to get to their lockers. The hallways are always crowded so it always takes a few minutes before the students can actually get out of the mess. Also because of the design, kids with the top and bottom lockers are always racing to get to the locker before the other student. Teachers don’t understand how long we can take to grab our stuff and get to class. That is the reason there are always students running in the hallways. Teachers put pressure on students when they are late. Most of the time, students get in trouble when they are late to class. During passing period, 6th graders are always stressed about getting to class early. Some other teachers might keep them in before another class. Sometimes, kids might be dismissed late and be late to their next class. Then because of this, the student is blamed for being late by the teacher in the next class. Sometimes teachers don’t give the student a chance to explain why they are late. That is not fair, especially when we are taught as young children that adults know everything. On top of that, we’re taught not to talk back to teachers. They way that we are taught that if we do something wrong, we will be punished. Now there is seriously something wrong there. How can a student be accused of a “crime” they did not commit? And of course, we don’t want to be punished. We have strict rules in this school that are connected to time and schedules in this school. There are obviously consequences of being late for class. Consequences differ a lot with other teachers. There are some easy going teachers and the mean strict ones. Sometimes students get humiliated in front of the class for being late. That is not fair. Students should be allowed to talk for themselves if they are blamed for being late even if it’s not their fault. Students should also be able to explain why they are late if it's because of locker problems. Teachers should not keep students after class or after school. We have places to go, whether it's another class when the bell rings, or somewhere else after school. Hopefully the rules change, and adults should never make assumptions, just like any other human.
